Early life and Brazilian heritage
Camila Carraro Mendes was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, to Brazilian parents. Her family moved frequently during her childhood, and she spent part of her early life in Brazil before growing up primarily in Florida.
Mendes has spoken publicly about navigating both her American upbringing and her Brazilian identity. That background later became especially relevant to Música, a film centered on a Brazilian American character and his experiences with family, romance and cultural expectations.
After high school, Mendes studied acting at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She graduated in 2016, shortly before obtaining the role that launched her television career.
Riverdale provided her breakthrough role
Mendes made her professional acting breakthrough as Veronica Lodge in Riverdale, The CW’s darker reinterpretation of characters from Archie Comics. The series premiered in 2017, when Mendes was still at the beginning of her career.
Her version of Veronica was a confident and ambitious newcomer who arrived in Riverdale from New York. Although the character’s relationships generated much of the show’s drama, Veronica was also portrayed as a business-minded figure trying to establish an identity separate from her powerful parents.
Mendes remained part of the principal cast throughout the show’s seven seasons. Riverdale ended in August 2023 after 137 episodes. Netflix’s official guide to the Riverdale cast identifies Mendes alongside KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse as one of the actors at the center of the series.
The long-running role gave Mendes international recognition, but it also created the challenge of separating her public identity from a single character. In a 2024 interview with Time, she described Riverdale as a formative experience that prepared her for the next stage of her career.
Camila Mendes’ movies
Mendes began appearing in films while she was still working on Riverdale. Her early credits included The New Romantic, The Perfect Date and Coyote Lake.
She played Tala in the 2020 romantic comedy Palm Springs, starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti. The film’s time-loop premise introduced Mendes to audiences outside the young-adult television world.
In 2022, she took a leading role opposite Maya Hawke in Do Revenge. Mendes played Drea, a socially prominent student who joins forces with Hawke’s Eleanor to retaliate against people who hurt them. The stylized dark comedy gave Mendes a character who initially appears composed and powerful but has more complicated motivations beneath the surface. The film and its credited cast are listed on the official Netflix page for Do Revenge.
Mendes led two romantic films in 2024:
- In Upgraded, she played Ana Santos, an ambitious art-world intern whose unexpected flight upgrade leads to a new relationship and an increasingly difficult deception.
- In Música, she played Isabella opposite the film’s director and star, Rudy Mancuso. The story follows a Brazilian American musician dealing with love, family pressure and his unusual perception of everyday sounds.
She also served as an executive producer on both films. That involvement marked a meaningful expansion of her work beyond acting.
Mendes subsequently played Teela in the live-action Masters of the Universe. The fantasy adventure, directed by Travis Knight, also stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam/He-Man, Idris Elba as Duncan and Jared Leto as Skeletor. Mattel’s official announcement confirms Mendes’ role as one of He-Man’s closest allies.
Her move into production
Mendes co-founded the production company Honor Role with actor and producer Rachel Matthews, whom she met while studying at NYU. The company allows the pair to participate in developing projects instead of waiting solely for acting opportunities.
This move helps explain the direction of Mendes’ post-Riverdale career. Upgraded and Música were not simply starring vehicles; they gave her experience in executive production and greater involvement in how her characters and stories were developed.
Her progression from ensemble television actor to film lead and producer is significant because it gives her more influence over the types of roles she plays. It also creates opportunities to support stories and creative perspectives that may receive less attention through conventional casting channels.
Is Camila Mendes Brazilian?
Mendes is American by birth and Brazilian by heritage. The description “Brazilian American” reflects both parts of her background: she was born in the United States, while both of her parents are Brazilian.
She has discussed the complications of being perceived differently in the United States and Brazil, including expectations surrounding language and cultural identity. Her connection to Brazil is therefore more than a promotional label, although it should not be used to misstate her birthplace or nationality.
What is Camila Mendes’ net worth?
Camila Mendes’ exact net worth has not been publicly verified. Celebrity-finance websites publish estimates, but these figures generally lack access to contracts, taxes, investments, business expenses and other information required to calculate personal wealth accurately.
It is reasonable to say that Mendes earns income from acting, producing and commercial partnerships. Assigning her a precise net-worth figure without reliable financial records, however, would present speculation as fact.
